Unilever are known for owning over 400 products but focus mainly on selling 14 brands such as Flora, Hellmans, Lynx, Dove and Ben and Jerry's.
It all began in the 19th century where the demand for butter was reaching its limit. With the rise of the industrial revolution and the increase of populations, butter was one of the main resources of food people would need in their lives. In 1885 two Dutch families began to make a solution to the shortage of butter. They came up with the mixture of beef fat and milk to produce margarine, which would last longer than butter.
In 1930, Unilever was created with two main people. One was the Dutch margarine producer, Margarine Unie, and the other partners were the British Soap makers, the Lever brothers.
Brand One: Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream
My first brand I chose to write about is Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Cookie Core Selection. In the video we see a cow having thousands of cookies thrown at it and shovels the cookies into the ice cream to make the Cookie Core Selections. I believe it works due to how they have a natural background to show that their ingredients are from fair trade and they use local farms for their milk. It is also different to other adverts with having a cow as the main piece and easily catches the attention of people. Ben and Jerry's opened their first ever ice cream shop in a gas station in Vermont in 1938. When the product began to grow more popularity, they began to pack the ice cream in pints to distribute between grocery stores and shops. To do this they delivered all their products on the back of an old VW that was owned by Ben. In the early 1980s the word had spread across Vermont and the demand for the ice cream grew. As the company continued to grow so did the choice of flavours and has now become one of the most popular desserts within society.
Brand Two: PG Tips
For my second brand I chose PG Tips Christmas Special. In the video we see the symbolic character of Monkey performing as the Queen and giving a live speech. I found this to be quite funny and is suited to older generations such as adults and the elderly. It also shows that PG Tips focuses on keeping up to date with important dates and events such as V Festival and Christmas.
In 1930, Brooke Brand launched Pre-Gest-Tee to imply that it could be drunk prior to eating and was soon changed to PG Tips my salesman and grocers. When PG Tips began to focus on advertisement they began there adverts with having chimpanzees dressed in human clothing. Throughout the years PG Tips have focused on perfecting their brand of tea bags with changing the style and size of them; with additional range of fruit, herbal and green tea brands.
Brand Three: VO5
My final product is VO5 hair products and I chose the advert that shows a talent show. Within the advert we see a pageant occur within a small town and the lack of acceptance one boy gets for changing the style of his hair compared to everyone else. It ends with a girl from the audience who has also used the product run to see him and they both leave the pageant. This advert attracts teenage boys and young adults to buy this product to make them stand out from the crowd. It shows audiences that they are able to express themselves and their own styles if they use this product and believe it is a successful advert. VO5 was formally known as Alberto VO5 and was created for actresses in films within the 1955s. It originated in Culver and was used to protect the actresses hair from the tough conditions whilst making the movies. The number five represent on the popular brand implies the five key vitamins used within their product. These vitamins are vitamin E for hydration, vitamin B5 for moisture, vitamin B3 for nourishment, vitamin H for body and vitamin C for strength. As the years have progressed VO5 products have expanded from shampoo and conditioners, gels and oils, as well as hair sprays and waxes. VO5 is now one of the most popular hair treatment products and has a vast range for men and women with whatever hair length or style.
